Big Steps for Little Feet: Helping Children (and Parents!) Transition into Primary School

By Penny, Founder of The Northern Nanny Agency

As the long summer days begin to shorten and September peeks around the corner, many families are preparing for one of childhood’s biggest milestones: starting primary school. For children beginning Reception, it’s a time of wonder and growth  but also of big feelings, both for them and for the grown-ups who love them.

This year, I’m experiencing this transition on two fronts. As the founder of The Northern Nanny Agency, I’ve supported many families and nannies through this stage. But this year, it’s also personal , my daughter, Charlotte, is starting Reception too. Like so many parents, I’m feeling all the emotions: pride, nerves, a little sadness, and a whole lot of love.

Whether you’re a nanny supporting a child through this milestone or a parent preparing your little one for their first day, here are some thoughts, tips, and reassurances to help you navigate the journey.

🌱 A Whole New World

Reception marks the start of formal education and brings big changes in routine, environment, and expectations. Children begin to experience greater independence, learn new social skills, and adjust to structured days in a new setting.

For many children who have had a nanny or been in early years care, this is still a big shift. While they may be used to being away from home during the day, school brings a new level of structure, unfamiliar faces, and more time apart from the caregivers they’ve come to trust.

💛 From Nanny to After-School Hero

We know from experience at The Northern Nanny Agency how strong the bond can be between a child and their nanny. When school begins, many families worry about what happens to that relationship. The good news is: it doesn’t have to end , it just evolves.

Many of our families continue working with their nannies for after-school care, school pickups, homework help, tea time routines, and as a warm, familiar presence during a big period of change. This continuity often helps children feel secure as they adjust to their new world.

💡 Tips for a Smooth Transition

Here are a few ways you can support your child (and yourself!) through the start of school:

1. Talk about school in a positive way: Share stories, read books about school, and help your child feel curious and excited not anxious.

2. Visit if possible: Familiarity with the classroom and surroundings can make the first day feel a little less daunting.

3. Practise independence: Encourage your child to manage simple tasks like putting on their coat, opening their lunchbox, and using the toilet confidently.

4. Keep routines predictable: A consistent morning and bedtime routine will help your child feel secure, rested, and ready for the day.

5. Be kind to yourself: This is a big moment for parents too. It’s okay to feel emotional — I certainly will be when I wave Charlotte off on her first day.

💬 A Note from Me

Watching Charlotte get ready for Reception has been a powerful reminder of how quickly time moves. One moment they’re taking their first steps, and the next they’re lining up at the school gate with a backpack nearly as big as they are.
